LARYNGECTOMY AT MEDIKERI’S SUPER SPECIALITY ENT CENTRE

At Medikeri’s Super Speciality ENT Centre, we provide expert surgical care for patients requiring laryngectomy—most often due to laryngeal cancer. Our dedicated ENT and head & neck surgical team offers compassionate, comprehensive treatment to ensure the best possible functional and oncological outcomes.

PROCEDURE OVERVIEW

Laryngectomy involves the partial or complete removal of the larynx (voice box). It is typically performed to treat advanced laryngeal cancer or severe trauma. The procedure helps eliminate cancer while ensuring the patient retains the ability to breathe, swallow, and communicate effectively with rehabilitation.

ANESTHESIA & PREPARATION

The surgery is carried out under general anesthesia. Preoperative planning includes imaging (CT, MRI), endoscopic evaluation, and staging of the cancer. Patients and families are counseled extensively on the surgical process, voice rehabilitation options, and lifestyle changes post-surgery.

SURGICAL TECHNIQUES

Depending on the extent of the disease, either a partial laryngectomy (preserving some vocal function) or total laryngectomy (complete removal of the voice box) is performed. A permanent stoma (breathing hole) is created in the neck, and lymph nodes may also be removed if necessary.

MINIMALLY INVASIVE APPROACHES

Where feasible, transoral laser microsurgery or robotic-assisted techniques may be used in early-stage cancers to reduce tissue trauma and enhance recovery. These options preserve more laryngeal function while ensuring effective cancer control.

CLOSURE & RECOVERY

The neck is carefully closed with drainage tubes in place. Patients are closely monitored in the postoperative period, typically in an ICU or high-dependency unit. Nutritional support is provided via a feeding tube until swallowing function is restored.

POST-SURGICAL CARE

Recovery involves speech and swallowing therapy, stoma care training, and regular follow-ups. Voice rehabilitation using tracheoesophageal prosthesis (TEP) or electrolarynx is initiated to help the patient regain communication ability and confidence.

CONCLUSION

At Medikeri’s Super Speciality ENT Centre, we are committed to delivering comprehensive care for patients undergoing laryngectomy. With advanced surgical techniques and personalized rehabilitation plans, we help patients lead fulfilling lives post-treatment.
