GLOSSECTOMY AT MEDIKERI’S SUPER SPECIALITY ENT CENTRE

At Medikeri’s Super Speciality ENT Centre, we provide comprehensive surgical care for patients requiring glossectomy, a procedure often performed to treat tongue cancer or severe trauma. Our experienced ENT and head & neck oncology team ensures optimal cancer control while preserving as much function as possible for speech and swallowing.

PROCEDURE OVERVIEW

Glossectomy involves the partial or complete removal of the tongue depending on the extent and location of the disease. It is commonly indicated for oral cancers involving the tongue and may be combined with neck dissection or reconstructive surgery for comprehensive treatment.

ANESTHESIA & PREPARATION

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. Preoperative assessments include imaging (CT, MRI), biopsy, and staging workup. Nutritional and speech evaluations are done in advance to plan postoperative support and rehabilitation.

SURGICAL TECHNIQUES
  • Partial Glossectomy: Involves removal of a portion of the tongue when cancer is limited.

  • Hemi-glossectomy or Total Glossectomy: Performed for larger or deeply invasive tumors.
Reconstruction may involve local flaps or free tissue transfer (e.g., radial forearm or anterolateral thigh flap) to restore function and appearance.

MINIMALLY INVASIVE APPROACHES

In select early-stage tumors, Transoral Laser Microsurgery (TLM) or Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) may be used to reduce tissue trauma and improve recovery time, while maintaining oncological safety.

CLOSURE & RECOVERY

Post-surgery, the wound is closed with or without reconstruction, depending on the extent of excision. A temporary tracheostomy and feeding tube may be placed. Patients are closely monitored in a high-dependency or ICU setting for airway and nutritional support.

POST-SURGICAL CARE

Recovery includes speech and swallowing therapy, nutritional support, and regular oncology follow-ups. Emotional and psychological counseling is also offered, especially in total glossectomy cases, to support adaptation and rehabilitation.

CONCLUSION

At Medikeri’s Super Speciality ENT Centre, our goal with glossectomy is complete cancer removal while maximizing postoperative function and quality of life. With expert surgical skill and holistic rehabilitation support, we help patients recover confidently and regain control of their daily lives.
